If you are being pulled over for a suspected DUI, you will need to take certain steps to avoid having any problems. Knowing what to do when this situation occurs is important.

Pull Over and Get Your Information Ready

When you are first pulled over, it is best to roll the windows down to speak to the officer. During that time, you may need to show the officer your license and other information, including your vehicle registration and your car insurance papers. It is best to know your rights when you are being pulled over for DUI. While you do need to let the officer see your license, insurance information, and registration, there is nothing else that you will need to provide to the officer at this time.

Answer Questions the Right Way

After you have handed over your information, the officer may begin to ask you a bunch of different questions. These questions can cause some confusion and you certainly do not want to incriminate yourself for anything, so try to stick with answering questions with a simple yes or no. Remember that you do not need to look at the officer’s face when talking. If you are worried that the officer may try to assume that you have been drinking because your eyes are a bit red, you should continue to look forward while answering any of the questions. While it is important to remain calm, you do not need to go into detail about anything. You should not say too much because saying a lot more than you need to could cause you to incriminate yourself. If you have had an alcoholic beverage and you are talking too much, the officer is easily going to smell the hint of alcohol that is coming from you.

Avoid Taking the Tests

Some drivers believe they must follow an officer’s orders that involve taking a sobriety test outside of the vehicle. However, this is not true. You do not need to go above and beyond to prove that you are sober. The only thing you are responsible for doing when pulled over for DUI is handing over your information that is inside of the vehicle. Continue to refuse the test, even if the officer is trying to persuade you to do so.

Not taking the test could cause the officers to get upset and they might even arrest you at the moment. Although it is frustrating to get arrested, there is a method to this madness. The officers cannot charge you with DUI if they are not fully certain that you are not sober. As a result, the officer will not have nearly enough evidence to support his or her claims. There are even times where officers do not arrest individuals and simply allow them to drive away because of their lack of cooperation. No matter what happens, following these steps is the best way for you to potentially avoid a difficult legal situation.
